M515 Primary Processing

A Quarry in Australia had a lot of overburden to process that contained over 50% recoverable rocks. Their goal was to grade these materials into five different products.

The overburden at the customer's site had been accumulating for years, occupying a significant portion of the quarry space. Additionally, the piles contained a considerable amount of rock that could be sold as aggregates.

The Challenge:

The challenge was that the aggregate was mixed with clay and too large and sticky to be processed with their screeners. Some of the rocks in the overburden pile were as big as 750mm (30”), which was too large for their existing equipment. The customer wanted to separate the material into fractions of 0-20mm (0-0.75”), 20-50mm (0.75-2”), 50-150mm (2-6”), 150-300mm (6-12”), and oversize up to 750mm (30”).

The M515 Heavy Duty Trommel Solution:

The MDS M515 trommel was the perfect primary processing solution, as it could handle large, heavy loads of up to 20 tonnes in its 12.6 cubic metre hopper. Its hydraulic push feeder mechanism allowed it to manage these substantial loads, which often contained large stones, taking on all the initial heavy work. The rotating drum mechanism cleaned and screened the material by agitating and breaking up clay and impurities from the rocks. As the rocks tumbled inside the drum, they collided with each other and the drum walls, resulting in superior cleaning.

The accompanying screener was then positioned on the fines conveyor to receive all the material smaller than 150mm. Thanks to the MDS unit, the material was already broken up, and the remaining clay was easy to process on the screener without blocking the screens.

Job Requirements:

-Clear the large overburden site
-Break up minus 150mm product for easier processing on the screener
-Produce large 150-300mm (6-12”) and 300-750mm (12-30”) product from MDS

The MDS M515 Heavy Duty Trommel can handle large feed loads of up to 20T in its massive 12.6m3 (16.5yd3) hopper, taking up to 800mm (32”) size rocks in the feed. This unit offers a different screening mechanism to regular screens, allowing it to effectively clean rocks and screen materials. It has a rotating drum that tumbles and agitates the material inside, allowing it to break impurities from the rocks, which are then easier to process in screeners.

Key Benefits:

1.Clay Separation: The M515 effectively separated the sticky clay from the larger Limestone rocks, creating a clean mid-size and over-size product.

2.Space Optimization: By processing this material, the customer significantly reduced the amount of unusable material stockpiled, creating more room in the quarry, and enabling more efficient operations.

3.Product Diversification: The machine setup with the screener created 5 different sized products:

-0-20mm (0-0.75”) fines product off the screener
-20-50mm (0.75-2”) product off the screener mid-section
-50-150mm (2-6”) product of the screener oversize
-150-300mm (6-12”) product off the M515 mid conveyor
-300-750mm (12-30”) product on the oversize conveyor

Conclusion:

Introduction of MDS M515 unit into the site optimized their processing and gave greater productivity. It eliminated screener downtime due to clay blockages on the screens and also protected it from being overworked with heavier loads. The M515 unit successfully handled the larger roads and fed a direct consistent supply of fines material to the screener, which was a lot easier for the unit to process. By effectively breaking down clay content and producing five sized products, the machine not only optimized quarry space but also contributed to environmental sustainability.
